I had the amazing opportunity to spend a day with Dodo at the Patara Elephant Farm in Chiang Mai, Thailand. It was one awesome day!
I was very impressed with how well they treat these elephants. Although elephants are best to be free in the wild, the dangers they face are driving them to extinction. The Patara Elephant Farm is doing their part to ensure that does not happen to this beautiful, majestic creature.
Feel free to check them out yourself:

OMG Brock, that is soooooo cool. I must say I’m a bit envious. That is something I will earmark to do some day myself! Glad to see you are feeling better and not down and out for long.
Holy Crap!! This is the coolest thing you’ve done yet…!!! The trunks on elephants are soo cool. I never actually saw a real one before. One word for this video: INSANE!!!
WOW! I will def do this when I go to Thailand one day!!!
Awww! We think you should change all upcoming posts to “Backpacking with Dodo” . He’ll fit in your pack right? : )
Wow that looks so cool!!!! I now have to add that to my “must do ” list!
Patara Elephant Farm is a really great place…what’s nuts is that I met Lucky just a few days after (he/she?) was born and there you are playing with Lucky in the water!
Great video…..I hope to go back & visit Patara some day.
So glad to see you riding Dodo and doing a great job. This is one of the things I thought you should try on your travels. You were asking for ideas for the Fri. 5. As time goes by how about some examples of native/cultural dances. And why wouldn’t you show off some of your singing skills even if it is karoke?
Looks like you had a blast. Nice job with the video too. What are you shooting with? Editing with? And who filmed while you were riding the elephant? Sorry for all of the questions, just curious to see if you had someone that worked at Patara give you a hand with the filming.
Safe travels!
@Teresa – Yes! Totally cool. It was a pretty exciting day and I am glad I am feeling better as well.
@Ryan – Yes Insane is a good description. I was so fascinated at how the trunk is like hand essentially. They can do everything with it.
@Shannon – I support you 10000% in that decision.
@Lesley – Oh if only! I love Dodo.
@Kate – People have really taken to this elephant thing. Dodo is going to be popular from the sounds of it.
@Darren – You saw lucky a few days after he was born? How cool! He’s was adorable. Thanks Darren!
@Aunt Grace – Ya, I did better then I thought. Good idea for the Friday Five. I am gonna keep an eye out for that. There are certainly a lot of different dances around the world. I shall find them. I’m not very good at Karaoke…
@Ryan – I had a great time. As for the questions – no worries. I am shooting with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 point and shoot. It does HD and is a pretty great camera. I am editing with iMovie on a Macbook Pro. And as for the filming, Patara shoots some with their cameras and I got them to do a bit for me as well. They were really chill about it. Checked out your site. Great work. Looking forward to following your adventures. For those who would like to as well check out: http://www.pausethemoment.com
Brock, thanks a lot for the feedback! I appreciate it. I’m subscribed to your feed so every time a new video pops up, I’m on it. Haha.
I like that you’re doing something different with your blog. It’s great to see people moving in different directions with travel blogs these days. I’m hoping to be able to do a lot of video myself. We’ll see though! I know that HD video can be pretty time consuming when it comes to editing and all. Plus I tend to be a perfectionist when I’m editing my video so it’s going to take forever! That’s the beauty of having no time limit on this trip though. Haha.
I’m linking you in my Travel Community as we speak under “Travel Blogs”. http://www.pausethemoment.com/community .
Keep up the good work.
@Ryan – Awesome feedback. Hearing that makes the editing and such worth it. I was a perfectionist at first then realized I could fix that clip perfectly or go see a 50 metre long buddha – I went with the buddha, and I think you would to. If you need any help/suggestions/the like about video logging just shoot me an email. I’d be glad to help. And…Thanks for the link!
OMG…I just viewed this blog tonight Brock and absolutely loved it. You looked so happy. What an opportunity to take advantage of. Not too many people can say they’ve actually cared for an elephant for a day. Take Care …thinking of you as always.
@Shelly – You liked that eh? And Dodo to boot. He was great and definitely something I will always look back on with fond memories.
Brock, we rode out to Patara with you that morning.
Marcia and Luciana (both doctors) from Brazil were in the van with us.
It really was truly a fantastic day. The Patara people were wonderful.
We will continue following your blog — thanks for sharing.
(Hope you stayed away from the fruit juices the rest of the time in Chiang Mai)
Ed & Millicent
@ The Williams – WOW! I can’t believe you actually found the site. Google I presume? I was so disappointed that I did not see you after to pass on my card. I am glad you had a wonderful day like I did and I hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip. It was a pleasure to meet you all. Thank you for checking in and feel free to do so any time. Oh and no…I did not touch that fruit juice again!
Definetely I want to do this activity when I go to Thailand one day
@Authentic – And you can! Totally look them up!
