The Great Newfoundland Road Trip: Day Three

Western Brook Tours
Our third day in Newfoundland started EARLY!

When the alarm went off just before 7am I cringed a little. Exploring a new place can tire you out, especially when it’s packed full of awesome. Such is the case for Newfoundland. Around every corner is something exciting, something beautiful, something that makes you stop and just stand in awe.

Tired or not, we were out of bed and prepping for another day of taking in that ‘awesome’.Western Brook Gros Morne Hike

Than I opened the door. Rain. Damn.

It’s bound to happen. I expected it. You can’t go to Newfoundland and not experience a bit of rain, it’s part of the charm really.

This morning however was not when we wanted to experience the charm. We had a boat tour booked for the Western Brook Fjord and we wanted sunshine.

As we made the drive back to Gros Morne National Park, the three of us worked out a plan of action should the rain keep falling. We weren’t exactly prepared for rain and we knew it. It’s not like we weren’t warned.

Happy TravellersMaybe it was my grumpiness or the change in the wind, (seriously, both are justifiable reasons in my opinion), but as we arrived at the entry point the rain began to clear a bit.

Dawning whatever rain gear we had, we started the trek into the boat launch point and the further we got, the more the sun came out. By the time we were on the boat, it was beautiful blue skies.

Western Brook Fjord PhotoI have VERY strange luck with weather. Good weather follows me and my theory was proven once again. You’re welcome fellow travellers.

Our adventure was with Western Brook Tours and they would be taking us out to see a stunning fjord. As we set out on the water towards the fjord, I happened upon an amazing surprise. On the same tour was the lovely and ever funny Pamela of the travel blog, Savoir Faire Abroad. Pam and I had attended travel events back and Toronto and here we were on the same boat tour in Newfoundland. Dear Travel Gods, You Rock!

Savoir Faire Abroad Backpack With BrockPam was on a mammoth journey across Canada. Literally coast to coast. It was fantastic to take in the beauty around me with a fellow travel blogger. We were headed opposite directions so we compared notes on what to look forward to.

The fjord was created by glaciers and the rock walls that can be up to 600 m high are  the most northern part of the Appalachians.

Our boat ride was relaxing and filled our brains with tons of info about what was around us. With such a sunny day, it was the perfect excursion.

Yet again Newfoundland, you’re so damn beautiful.

Tired TravellersOnce we were back on solid ground, my mom, aunt, Pam and I walked the board walk back to the parking lot and along the way, we had to stop for a little nap.

Like I said, travelling is tiring. You’ve got to get your rest when you can. I don’t think we could have picked a better spot.

We eventually made it back to our cars and took a minute to check out Pam’s wheels. She was testing out a Ford C-Max hybrid hatchback. We couldn’t convince her to switch with us. Sharing is caring Pam.

We bid farewell to Pam and were on the road again, stopping for coffee and to check out some more spots on route to our next stop, Grand Falls – Windsor.

A few hours and many trees later we arrived and checked into my favourite accommodation the road trip: Hotel Robin Hood.

Hotel Robin HoodIt’s one thing to have a hotel room or cabin, but we literally had our own 2 floor apartment. Kitchen, deck, bbq, dining room, lounge, master bedroom, breakfast, and a jacuzzi.

It was perfect.

We were staying in the Maid Marion Suite (how cool) and took advantage of the bbq to cook up some steaks for dinner. The weather and setting were perfect and allowed us the opportunity to take a break, reminisce and absorb all the incredible things we’d been experiencing on our road trip.

Here’s a video of our suite:

It goes without saying that our third day on the Great Newfoundland Road Trip was a success.

We got up close in personal with some of the provinces natural beauty, shared laugh after laugh with a fellow traveller and wrapped it up with a relaxing evening in.

That’s travel done right.

It soon came time to turn in yet again, all the three of us pleased as punch with the day.

Thank you to Go Western Newfoundland, Adventure Central Newfoundland, Western Brook Tours & Hotel Robin Hood for making our day so special.
