The Russian Adventure Begins – But How Did Brock End Up There?

If you didn’t catch it, I recently announced that with the Viator Dream Travel Job wrapped, I am now in Russia!
Go ahead and give it a watch so we’re on the same page.

You might be wondering how I ended up here though. As if running around North America for 2 and a half months wasn’t enough, this boy doesn’t even wait 24 hours to jump on a plane to RUSSIA!?

Yes, I might be a bit crazy.

The Reason

Here’s the deal. Darren, who you may remember from my India videos and adventures – in fact he filmed the hilarious Indian HaircutIndia Sleeper Train, is spending this fall in France on a student exchange but planned to do some backpacking through Europe first. His favourite place is Russia and it worked out that he would be arriving there at the same time I would be finishing Viator.

You can see where this is going right?

Naturally (after being invited of course) I said I would tag along and explore a country I missed out on during my year around the world.

Plan In Action

On August 16th I hopped on a plane in San Francisco to fly overnight to New York City – a red eye.
I had a 10 hour layover at JFK airport so I treated myself to a special airport lounge.

Airport Lounge JFKJust because I’m a budget backpacker doesn’t mean I can’t have fancy things sometimes.

Let’s consider it a treat to my fellow passengers too as I’m sure I smelt wonderful after so much time in transit.

There was a shower, bag storage, wifi, breakfast, lunch, quiet and unlimited drinks of the alcoholic variety.

AKA: Heaven!

I then hopped on a second overnight – red eye number 2 – flying from New York City to Moscow, Russia.

Russian Passengers TransaeroNew Russian Friends

In true Brock style, I quickly made friends with my row, two russians of course, and the adventure was official in full swing.

Russian Vodka on PlaneWe talked all things Russia and Canada, I got plenty of tips and succeeded in my quest to get the stern Russian flight attendent to smile, much to the surprise of my new friends.

Oh and what flight to Moscow would be complete without Vodka at 4:30 in the morning?

Welcome to Russia peoples!

Over the next few weeks I’ll take you through my experiences in the world’s largest country. From exploring the Moscow Metro to the spectacular Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia certainly packs a punch.
