There are a few things I was warned about when I started planning my trip to Russia.
One was that accommodation in Moscow is EXPENSIVE! – a word that a budget backpacker does everything to avoid.
I had these fears of ending up in some super dodgy shoebox that cost me an arm and a leg. However, when it came time to set things up ,I hopped online and much to my surprise I found some pretty reasonable options throughout the city.
My favourite was a place called Chillax Hostels. Slightly newer to the Moscow hostel scene, Chillax easily met all my requirements for a spot to rest my head.
Positive reviews, wifi, a kitchen, affordable/comfy beds, and a great location.

From the moment I arrived, it was clear how the hostel got it’s name. The place was SO chilled out. In fact, it felt like I was was just hanging out at a friend’s house. Of course I asked and yes, that was the intention.
This would be the perfect jump off point for my adventures in Moscow.
In fact – I would go as far as saying this is the best hostel in Moscow.

A few details about the hostel:
Internet: The wifi connection was strong and there are computers for those travelling without a laptop.
Kitchen: Good enough for what you’ll be cooking. Refrigerator is a bit of a monster so be sure to put your name on your food.
Beds: Very comfy. I stayed in the 10 bed dorm and felt I had plenty of space.
Lockers: Large and the hostel provides the key. No reason not to lock up your valuables.
Bathroom: Separate facilities for girls and boys. Toilets are a bit tight on space but shower makes up for it. There are a million different settings. A surprise every time. Showering has never been so fun.
Location: Very easy to get to by metro whether you’re arriving by train or plane. A short walk to Red Square and the fantastic metro will get you anywhere else you need to go.
Price: At time of writing beds ranged from $17-$27 per night.
Staff: Extremely helpful and accommodating. From making me feel so welcome to helping me book my train ticket. They also spoke English fluently as well as a few other languages.
Other: There are movie nights in the lounge. A small supermarket is located just around the corner. Laundry (washer and dryer) are available for a fee. Try the traditional restaurant they recommend (you learn about it in my post Moscow #1). The hostel can assist with your Visa invitation to Russia.
With all that said, if I was visiting Moscow again I honestly would stay at Chillax Hostels.
