An Injury in India – Do You Have Travel Insurance?

When I travel, I do not leave home without insurance. The thought of going without does not even cross my mind. Sure, nothing will likely happen – BUT – what if something does? At that point it’s too late and you can quickly find yourself drowning in hospital bills. It’s simply not worth it. What surprises me whenever I travel is that there are many travellers who do not buy insurance. Either they can’t afford it or they think they are invincible. In my own opinion you cannot afford NOT to have insurance nor is anyone ‘invincible’.

From the Backpack With Brock video vaults comes this time in India where I almost needed my insurance following a nasty fall in the New Delhi train station.

If you’re planning a trip and don’t have your insurance, I would recommend World Nomads. I personally use them every time I travel. They are friendly, efficient, affordable and cover pretty much everything travel insurance will cover.

  1. Is travel insurance really that necessary? I had a minor dirt bike accident in Ecuador a few years ago. The local hospital stitched me up and didnt charge me anything. It seems to me that even if I get really sick or have a serious accident cant I just get treated than immediately leave that country…Yeah, I would be skipping out on the bill, and thats never something I normally do…but In this case I think I would. Your thoughts?

  2. @Daniel – Sure, that’s an option. In many places like India, Thailand, and in your case Ecuador, you might not break the bank if you need a few stitches. However, if you need to be airlifted, have a massive surgery or anything where you can’t go down the street to the town doctor it’s not going to be cheap. When you’re in a coma you can’t exactly throw on an icepack and fly home. So yes, I always get insurance.
