Escaping the Winter Blues by Visiting the Canaries

Gran CanariaWhen the weather becomes cold and the sky turns grey, many people start to suffer from the winter blues. A great way to put the spring into your step and unwind a little is by taking a vacation to a sunny destination. A large number of last minute holidays are available the Canary Islands: Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Tenerife. There are some great deals available for those who know where to look.

Tenerife

People who can bear to tear themselves away from the beach for a few hours can take unforgettable hikes through the jungles that cover the centre of the island or take a stroll through the pristine Orotava Valley. Tenerife is also famous for its vibrant nightlife scene; dining on fresh seafood accompanied by a cocktail or two while watching the sun slowly sink behind the horizon is sure to be an experience that visitors will never forget.

Lanzarote

This is the smallest of the Canary Islands and is a good place to escape the crowds while enjoying plenty of sunshine at the same time during the winter months. People who crave a little peace and quiet are sure to enjoy soaking up the sun on the beautiful beaches that can be found on Lanzarote, especially towards the south of the island. Art lovers will also be in their element here as the Cesar Manrique Foundation provides an interesting collection of artwork that is just waiting to be discovered. Some of the other interesting activities to get involved with on Lanzarote include visiting the local caves and dormant volcanoes, while people who have their own transportation can spend time simply driving along coastal roads to take in stunning scenery along the way. While things tend to be pretty chilled out on Lanzarote, people who feel like letting their hair down a little in the evening will find a good range of bars and other entertainment options in the main town of Arrecife.

Gran Canaria

The main city of Las Palmas is a great place to use as a base while exploring Gran Canaria, as there are plenty of accommodations options to choose from as well as other amenities such as shops, bars and restaurants. Of course, most people travel to Gran Canaria to spend time on the beach and the island boasts plenty of golden stretches of sand to choose from such as and Playa de Las Alcaravaneras and Playa de Las Canteras. The Dunes of Maspalomas are also an enchanting sight which can be admired by people who are willing to take a short daytrip, while people who want to get a feel for local culture can explore attractions such as the Cathedral de las Palmas and La Luz Castle.
