The Friday Five – How Not To Get Scammed

When you’re traveling, it can be one of your biggest fears – getting scammed. It’s happened to me a few times already on this trip but hopefully these simple tips will help prevent it from happening to you.

  1. Taxis: I’ve found a great way to make sure I’m not being scammed by taxi drivers is to ask the hosts I’m staying with (hostel/couchsurfer/hotel/whoever) how much they’d expect to pay for a particular trip. Locals will know so it’ll give you a good estimate as what to expect.

ALSO, many taxi drivers won’t use the metre in their taxi. Instead, they’ll just tell you a price when you arrive. This is one of the FIRST things to figure out when you hop in the taxi because it can be a good/bad thing! If you’re negotiating a price, know ahead of time how much it should be. Sometimes it’s cheaper than the meter.

BUT,as a foreigner, sometimes ya just don’t know and end up paying WAY more than you should have! It’s part of the “oh well!” of travelling!

  2. @Darren – Good tips. Those darn taxis are sneaky! You have to take it all with a grain of salt. Thanks for the suggestion. Hopefully others can use it too!
