Althought I haven’t left yet, I’ll definitely have to bring my iPod with me. Not to listen to music all day and neglect the sights around me, but because my ipod is my iPhone and therefor I will be taking it in order to keep in touch around the world.
I very much like the idea of having no distractions from what I’m really travelling to see, including the sounds, but I think there would be some times (eg flights) where there really isn’t all that much to hear and an iPod/music would be nice. But I definitely won’t be using it most of the time!
But I must say, well done on not taking any MP3 player at all. I commend you for it.

I don’t even have an ipod. *blush* I listen to CD’s in my truck, or just the radio!
I can VERY easily see it being a magnet for theft though, especially in some of the countries where they are significantly poorer, and the money an iPod would bring in, would feed the family for ages!

I just got my first one a couple years ago–an iPod Shuffle–and have taken it on a few trips. I try to only use it when I’m in situations where I really need to block out the sound (screaming children, blaring salsa or other music, etc.) If I see that I’m in a setting where there’s potential to connect with people, I don’t even bring it out.
I admire the fact that you’ve left the iPod at home…and I really get why. Each reason made sense and especially the one re: wanting to experience it all. I totally agree!
I agree with all the points you made BUT I would still bring my ipod. Music is so important and comforting at times. I would spiral into a fit of depression if I couldn’t readily access my favorite music. Also it helps block out noise at hostels when I’m trying to fall asleep. Like most things moderation is key
@Darcy – Yes, every traveler is different. For me an iPod didn’t fit in to the picture but if it will help you on flights and long bus/train rides, then by all means. I know I often crave having it during those journeys.
@Donna – Yes, certainly a magnet of theft. They see those headphones and BAM! If ya don’t have it, it can’t be stolen.
@Lisa – I think you have the perfect balance. Using it for it’s purpose but not interfering with the fantastic opportunities handed to us by travel.
@Jordan – Yes, moderation is key. I have my laptop so that gives me a sort of fix when I really need it! Though it’s not much help on buses or falling asleep in hostels.
