The Friday Five – Should Brock Write a Book?

It’s a question I’ve been asked time and time again. ‘Are you going to write a book about your trip?’
While I did not even consider it at first, the more and more I think about it, it could be a fun idea. I mean, how often do you have juicy enough material to write about your adventures. Or at least that people would want to read?

So, if you don’t mind throwing Brock some of your feedback and insight as you have in a way joined him throughout this journey, he would be very much appreciative.

  1. A book is a hard one since there are so many out there but an ecliptic book with photos and anecdotes as well as comments about “must sees” and “just a tourist trap” input would be great, esp. if you suggest great places that locals know about but tourists are not aware. $15 to $20 is a fair price point and should be soft cover for easy carry and packing. An E-book can spin off from the soft cover.

Good luck with that ~ it is a daunting and time-consuming task that can be tedious at times. Not sure I would want to take it on.

  2. YES!!!!!!!!!!! Do a collection of short stories, that hasn’t been done a lot, would be a very cool concept.

  3. hmm.. I’ve never come across a backpack travel guide. but for me personally – while I do love to check your website for new videos and watch all the amazing things you get to do – I guess a book on how to successfully travel the world, on your own, with just a backpack would be not only entertaining but also informative.. You could write about your own experiences: traveling and it’s appeal, meeting new people and diving into other cultures – the experience on the road itself and give tips on how to do so – like the friday 5 kinda.
I also love the short stories idea.. maybe that could be tied into it.

I’ll chime in with a slightly different perspective.

You’ve done a good job at creating a “brand” with “Backpack With Brock”, and you should give some serious thought as to what you’re going to do with it. Will you retire it once you’ve finished posting all your videos, or keep it as a small, personal vlog for future travels, or perhaps build it into something bigger – maybe even a viable small business venture? A book could be a part of that.

I guess that counts for the “other” question #1. As for the rest of the questions:

5 – Should you write a book? It depends. Do you enjoy writing and (I have to ask) are you any good at it? If the answer is yes to both questions, then you should – even if it never gets published.

4 – What should it be about? Well, if you want to build your brand into a business, then you might write more than one book, but if it’s just a one-time thing, then a light-hearted, yet informative travelogue with tips would be good.

3 – How much would I pay for it? I guess it depends upon the format, content, number of pictures, etc. But $19.99 does present a psychological barrier, above which you’d need to offer something very appealing.

2 – Style/format – Well, I prefer holding a physical book over an eBook, but there’s no barrier to doing both formats. You can even self-publish in either or both formats. A larger sized “coffee table book” would be nice, but only if you have really spectacular still photos as the price would be higher.

    1 – see above.

You do seem to have some interesting stories to tell, so it’s not a bad idea. Good luck in whatever you decide! 🙂

  5. 5. Yes!
    4. I think an inspirational would be cool since their are so manyy how to books, but you would also have an original prospective on “how to” aswell so either would be great. I also think short storeis should be included along the way of the different interesting people ou met and things you did.
    3. 10$-20$ would be good
2.a physical copy – With lots of pictures!!!!
    1. you could try to publish your journals?
