I sure spent a long time researching what to bring around the world and while I did pretty well, bringing only the essentials – there are a few select items I could have left at home.
What have you brought traveling…that you should have forgot on the kitchen table instead?

Great advice about the travel towel. I’ve had an uneasy feeling about the one I bought, and I think I’ll look for another one before my trip.
I’m also glad to hear that a mosquito net isn’t useful. I didn’t plan to bring one, but have been wondering if that was a mistake. I’m glad to hear I’m making the right choice.
As for the sleeping bag, I bought a silk bag liner instead. It’s much smaller and lighter than a sleeping bag. I think it will be useful in places where I’m not confident about the cleanliness of the bedding. The woman at MEC also mentioned that bed bugs don’t like silk, so that could be a plus!
Great tips. 2 pairs of pants doesn’t sound like much, but when you showed them bunched up together it really showed how much room just 2 pairs takes in a backpack.
I’ve used that towel too. The two great things about it are that it takes up very little room and it dries really quickly. But yes, there are other travel-towels out there that absorb a bit better.
I WOULD work out a sunglass option, though! In sunny spots it is important to protect your eyes. BUT it’s true: they’re a pain to travel with!
You’ve done great. My problem is always just travelling with too much (too many t-shirts, socks, underwear, etc.) You’ve proven that you don’t need all that stuff & you’ll look just fine!
mosquito nets are useless. i completely agree.
i should have brought pants. i didn’t bring any because i thought cambodia would be deathly hot all the time and now we’re in cool season and i wish i had my jeans. even a blazer would be nice.
i’ve actually used my warm weather sleeping bag quite a bit. i’m a bit of a sheet queen. if it’s weird material or stained or whatever i’m out.
before we left we read something about a good swiss army knife being the ultimate travel item and it’s turned out to be fairly true. i’ve cut my bangs, fixed a purse and opened a wine bottle with it (all the important things, obviously).
Hmmm mosquito net definatly was something I barely used. Travel guides are bulky ( some of them ) and can be a nuisance to carry around. Especially when you can’t trade them as you borrowed them from a friend before you left >.<
I would have said my scarf but it turned out useful in the end!
And I broke every single pair of sunglasses I bought in almost record time!

@ Michael – Good call on the sleeping sheet. I would likely go with that next time. You use your towel all the time, so make sure you like it. Glad I could give you a good laugh, but really…who needs pants?
@Darren – Yes, the pants take up ALOT of space. Less is more. I actually bought a pair of sunglasses right after this post and guess what? Los them AGAIN!
@Jess – Good call on the Swiss Army knife. I can think of many times that would have come in handy!
@Ben – Even one comment is great Ben. I know you´re watching. Yes, leave the net at home and don´t borrow guides so you can rip stuff out or sell them when you are done with them! And thanks for the scarf – it has helped me so much!
Good tips – I have used a small, lightweight sleeping bag for the last two years. Looks like it takes up about half the size of yours, but has come in handy pretty often. Cold hostels in the hills without a blanket. Cold bus rides. Lying on top of it when the bed is REALLY shady. More like a heavy duty sleep sheet than sleeping bag though.
