The Friday Five – Worries About Going Home

It’s almost time for Backpack with Brock to head back home to Canada. While he is very excited for this, he also has a few concerns.

This week on the Friday Five, he shares with you these concerns. Any suggestions?

  1. Brock – I just wanted to say that you can likely expect that things will be EXACTLY the same as when you left, more or less. When I returned from a year in Australia in 2000, it took a matter of two weeks and I was working the same shifts in the same restaurant with the same people (mostly), and drinking the same beer in the same pub with the same friends. It is a decade later, so I suspect that these days I would come home to a hear about a few marriages and newborns, but other than that…pretty much status quo…the good news of all this: you didn’t miss too much while you were away!

Have a safe flight home next week – enjoy your last week!!

    Brock,
I was just expressing these concerns about you.

What will happen when you quit updating the site ~ you are more connected to more people than ever before!

What will you do? How can you settle in one place?
I have no doubt that you will find a way to support yourself financially. You are frugal and ingenious.

I believe that you will have changed more than the people you are returning home to. Some people experience a sort of “born again” mindset and want those around to be as aware of the world human condition and change the way we live with such excesses but they aren’t on board with you ~ and won’t be for the most part.

As far as what comes next. You don’t have to one-up yourself. Just live in the moment, plan for the future and treasure your past. I do believe, the best is yet to come.

  3. I left for 5 years to London, came home and NOTHING had changed. Same people complaining about the same job 5 years ago. The most changed thing was me, oh and some people moved to new houses in shittier areas but other than that…

Dont expect much in the way of change.

  4. Wow… crazy how time flies. I think I found your blog shortly after you embarked. It has been an exciting year for me looking forward to the Friday 5 and watching the Faux engagement. So, thanks for taking us along in your adventure Brock. You have definitely inspired and informed.

I have confidence that you will achieve whatever it is you decide to achieve. Should you choose to head back out on the road, I hope our paths cross at some point.

Best wishes and congrats on the completion of this adventure. Cheers to a new one!
