Another add-on for travellers with “smart” phones: if your phone (like the iPhone) can use the “Skype” program that Brock mentioned, you can use the program from anywhere in the world to call anywhere in the world without being charged regular cell-phone roaming and long-distance charges….if you’re not sure how it works ask around to figure it out! It can save you a tonne of money.
And some travellers think “oh, I don’t need to call my family every day to let them know I’m okay.” But it’s about having a way to call in case of emergency (always know the emergency number of the country you’re in; it’s not always 911 like in N.America) or to call hotels if you can’t find them or to ask about availability without wasting a trip there.
