Have you seen this film? Have you even heard of this film?
It’s name pretty much sums up the general idea of the film is, but I think it works better in a different order:
A Day In Life.
In a nut shell, the creators asked people to film their ‘life’ on July 24th, 2010 and to send it in.
The result was: 4500 hours of footage from 192 countries around the globe. The director, Kevin Macdonald, then created a 90 minute masterpiece which was screened at Sundance Berlin Film Festival, in theatres and now on Youtube.
Just recently I watched the film myself and what I love about it is it’s simplicity and insight into people’s regular lives around the world.
From eating, working, and bathing, to mourning, celebrating and moving the clips find a certain cohesiveness that prevents the movie from being jarring or choppy.
One of my favourite parts is the montage of people getting out of bed and their feet hitting the floor.
The film successfully showed how similar yet unique everyone’s life is. Everyone washes, everyone eats, everyone experiences.
Two major things I did notice, whether intentional or not on the directors behalf:
1) Certain members of the western or ‘developed’ world look rather spoiled. ie. girl straigtening her hair juxtapozed with a man feeding his goats surrounded by garbage.
2) The the subjects from ‘developing nations’ are featured in a mostly positive light, showing their spirit and happiness rather then the sadness and helplessness that is often incorrect and inundates western media.
I loved watching this film as it reminded me how beautiful even the simplest aspects of life can be – like washing your hair.
It also took me back to many places I’ve visited. Oh India.
