Malta Boats

Malta Maybe? Fellow Travellers Spark My Curiousty

Malta Boats

I was chatting up this elderly couple the other day as we were being shuttled out to board our airplane. They were on their way to Malta. The two had just explored Russia and northern Europe and were ready to warm up in the Mediterranean.

They were from Australia, were abroad for a few months and said they decided to make Malta their jump off point as many of their fellow Aussies had  found cheap holidays to Malta over the last few years.

It was in that moment I realized I have never entertained the idea of travelling to Malta before.

Hmm…why not?

I did a quick search online about Malta, well not right then as the flight attendent said all electronics had to be turned off, but I digress.

Malta BuildingsAll signs pointed to the fact that it’s beautiful. It has 9 UNESCO World Heritage sites and doesn’t get that cold – in comparison to Canada of course.

Oh, and they get almost 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. Amazing.

Perhaps Malta needs to enter my adventures in the near future, yes?

Now, although it doesn’t get as cold in the winter as Canada, it still might be a touch chilly for me.

I’m not alone in this idea of course. June through August is high season throughout Europe . As a budget backpacker, I’ll have to make a point of keeping an eye out for cheap Malta holidays in the summer if I want to travel there when everyone else does.

I did a little more hunting to find out some of the best things I can do in Malta. Here’s what I came up with:

1. They have great diving for beginners (like me) because the water around the island is calm and clear.

2. It has some of the oldest free standing structures in the world which has to be interesting. Old = cool. Malta Blue Grotto

3. There’s a happening night-life scene from theatre to events and dancing too!

4. Beaches.

5. My friend’s mom is Maltese! She’s got to have some suggestions or family I can hang out with.

The list is long of places I want to get to but Malta has definitely got me intrigued. Though it might not make my itinerary for this warm season, never say never I guess.

It would also be a new country I could say I’ve been to, not that anyone’s counting…

Have you been to Malta? Got any suggestions, tips or recommendations for yours truly?
