Is there any safe guards for the people offering the couch? Do you need a CRC or anything? How they protect themselves from weirdos coming into their place to use the couch?
Couchsurfing ROCKS! I Couchsurfed twice when traveling through Europe. Once in Spain, and once in Italy back in 2008. Both experiences were unbelievable! My favorite part about it is that you get to stay with people who work, eat, play and LIVE in the city that you’re visiting. The advice that you get while Couchsurfing tends to be the best and only advice you need! Not only that, but most of the time you get to meet the friends and family of your host and you really get to dig deep into the culture and every day environment of your destination which is something that you don’t get while staying in a hostel/hotel. If you get the chance to CS, don’t paas it up!

@Teresa – In terms of safeguards for hosts – it sort of works the same way as for surfers. You keep communication inside the site, check their references on their page and always have an escape plan. You are always in your right to ask them to leave and call the police if they refuse I guess. Hopefully it would never get to that.
@Ryan – Thank you for driving home what I was saying Ryan. He speaks the truth. Some of my best nights have been spent couch surfing. Do it. Do it. Do it.
